On July 1, 1863, two armies met on the battlefield of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. These armies were made up of soldiers from the United States and Canada, as well as soldiers from Europe. This war, which was fought on a small portion of the land, was a real clash of civilizations.
The armies fought for three days, and on July 3, 1863, the Union Army was badly beaten, and General Lee surrendered to General Meade. The Union Army was only able to defend the field of battle for a short time, after which the Confederates captured the field.
